"Perfect" is an old-fashioned love song inspired and dedicated to Ed's then-fianc (now wife) Cherry Seaborn. This is the fourth single of Sheeran's 2017 album.

He described his motivation for writing "Perfect" in an interview with Music Choice:

I think the song "Perfect" is actually better than "Thinking Out loud". I think there was always a fear that "thinking out loud" would compliment me and define my career. So I wrote a lot of songs trying to beat him and now I think, I think I beat him.

Thematically, the song is reminiscent of "18", a song he wrote for his friends in One Direction.

Beyoncé's "Perfect Duet" was released on December 1, 2017, and "Perfect Symphony" with Italian opera singer Andrea Bocelli was released two weeks later on December 15.

"Perfect" topped the Billboard Hot 100 chart on December 23, 2017. It also topped the charts in Australia, Canada, Denmark, France, Germany, Ireland, New Zealand, Sweden and the UK.
